Her Magic Wand is a band based in Paris. They recently released their album called “Everything at Once”. We interviewed them about the history of their band, some of their music, and a charity they support called Hungry For Music.
ALTP: What made you decide to name your band Her Magic Wand?
HMW: The project started when I discovered the wonderful world of computer based music, and the name Her Magic Wand is a nod to this great tool (my magic wand)!
ALTP: We’ve noticed lots of floral patterns throughout your album’s artwork, and music videos ... is there a reason you chose this color palette?
HMW: The name of my debut album "Everything At Once" is inspired by a scene in the Craig Gillespie film, Lars and the Real Girl, wherein the main character faces loss and love in a rollercoaster of life experiences while an old woman puts this contradiction perfectly into words by saying: « This is how life is, Lars. Everything at once ». The blue floral pattern from the artwork is actually from a wallpaper in an old house. It seems time perverted the initial color scheme, and some leaves and flowers have lost their colors and appear as though they were dead, while the blue flowers are very bright and seem very much alive. This dichotomy reminded me of the story behind the name of the album so I thought it was a nice fit. And since my wife had taken many pictures of the floral wallpapers from this house, we decided to use another one as the artwork from my first EP.
ALTP: When you hear your music, who do you picture your audience being?
HMW: My main influences are from the 90's and 00's while the instruments I use are from the 80's, so it seems my music speaks to a wide range of people including people who are nostalgic about those sounds. Usually people will come and speak to me after shows and tell me my music reminded them of some band I've actually never listened to. It's a great way to discover new bands!
ALTP: After watching your new video for your single Draw a Line, we were wondering what your process for creating music videos are? Your music videos are all from very unique perspectives, do you guys self direct them?
HMW: I know nothing about making videos, so the process is usually to post a brief and hire the director with the proposition that fits best with the music and the lyrics.
ALTP: If you could collaborate with any artist, who would it be?
HMW: I guess it would be with a great producer such as John Vanderslice or Dave Fridmann
ALTP: What charity did you guys choose to draw awareness towards? Why would you like to help this organization?
HMW: Hungry For Music is a charity that brings the opportunity to share instruments and musical experiences to children who don't have access to it. As a musician and a father, I feel music is a great medium for education and enriching children's lives. Music has the power to heal
ALTP: In what ways have you guys found yourselves currently helping others around you?
HMW: We played a show a few days after the killings in Paris at Le Bataclan, some people said it was their first show after the attacks and that the music helped them feel alive
ALTP: Who are your personal role models?
HMW: Kevin Shields, Steven Drozd, Markus Acher, Ben Gibbard, Billy Corgan as musical influences, but as role models I would probably say.. my parents.
