"Melanie may appear small on stage as she dances next to her massive props, but she has a larger-than-life presence" -Tarra Boroumandi
On October 27th, Melanie Martinez stopped by in Dallas, Texas for her much anticipated Crybaby tour. Fans waiting in the sold out venue were buzzing with energy and excitation. Everyone was decked out in vinyl dresses and pigtails, appealing to the singer’s childhood aesthetic. The Crybaby Tour kicked off on July 21st in Rhode Island, with sold out shows all across America. This is Melanie’s second tour for her debut album “Crybaby”. The former Voice contestant has gained much new-found success after her album dropped in 2015. Handsome Ghost take the stage first, a band from Boston, and they know how to command attention. They have everyone in the venue dancing by the time they start to play “Eyes Wide”. Tim Noyes creates a spectacular atmosphere with his infectious vocals. Then, the lights finally dim as the audience cheers for their favorite two-toned hair singer. The intro to “Crybaby” starts to play as Melanie Martinez pops out of a crib. Screams erupt as her trademark block letters light up. You could hear everyone in the room singing along to “Dollhouse” and “Sippy cup”. Song after song, Melanie was able to garner everyone’s pent-up excitement. An uplifting moment in the show was when Melanie took a break between songs to thank her fans for all they have done for her. You can see her near tears as she explains how grateful she is for everyone in the room. Her humble personality was evident in the way she spoke to everyone. Melanie may appear small on stage as she dances next to her massive props, but she has a larger-than-life presence. Throughout “Tag, you’re it” fans looked on in trepidation as a wolf runs on stage and locks Melanie up inside of a box. During “Milk and Cookies” she is able to break free and finally defeats the wolf, pouring out all her milk on him in victory. These theatrics add such a unique aspect to her live show. During “Mrs.Potato Head”, the audience watched in amusement as a bunny wearing a lab coat pulls out fake breasts and places them over Melanie’s chest. Something you definitely won’t be seeing at any other show. You could hear everyone in the room scream along to the line “No one will love you if you’re unattractive”. A startlingly true insight to our society’s standards of beauty. As soon as Melanie walked off the stage, you could hear everyone roaring for an encore. The blue lights flip back on as she take the stage to perform “Cake”, a fan favorite. She climbs on top of an enormous, two-tier cake as she belts out the chorus. Melanie Martinez’s concert was definitely one of the best shows I’ve been to. It’s hard to see how any other artist can live up to that. She has an efficacious performance that truly makes her album come to life.
