Harry Styles Heads in a New Direction with "Sign of the Times"
On April 7th 2017, Harry Styles had social media spinning with the debut of his new single, "Sign of the Times". While Styles originally earned his ticket to fame in the popular boyband, One Direction, it is safe to say that his new solo career will secure him a spot in the limelight for years to come. The song is the second track on his self titled and unreleased album, HARRY STYLES, which is set to be available on May 12.
"Sign of the Times" has been said to have influences of the legendary David Bowie, Oasis and The Beatles. The song begins with a slow and powerful piano chord progression, that gets louder as the song continues. Styles’ voice is very unique and almost raspy, as he sings, eventually hitting a few falsetto notes by the end. Drums, cymbals and electric guitar are also added into the mix, creating a rock ballad vibe that is rumored to be the basis of the entire album.
Lyrically, this is not the strongest song, as the chorus is essentially repeated for over 5 minutes. However, the meaning of the track goes beyond anything Styles worked on in One Direction. According to an interview Styles did with Rolling Stone , the singer claims the track is told from the perspective of a mother who is giving birth. She’s told the baby will be fine, but she will not survive the delivery. The sad tones from the song are an obvious reflection of Styles’ story. He also told Rolling Stone that “This isn't the first time we've been in a hard time, and it's not going to be the last time” which was his inspiration for the song.
Overall, "Sign of the Times" is definitely one for the books. The song has reached the top of the Billboard charts since its debut, giving clear indication of the success rate Styles will have moving forward. Until the full album is dropped, all one can do is listen to the track on repeat and hope May 12th arrives as soon as possible.
