To say you can be racist towards white people is to be false. What you can be is: discriminatory. Racism is something that is institutionalized but can still simply happen to an individual. Racism is a structure. You can see the racism that affects people of color in America daily. The way neighborhoods are set up, the prison system, discrimination when applying for a job, and police brutality. But those two things are very different. According to Dictionary.com reverse racism is an “intolerance or prejudice directed at members of historically dominant racial groups.” The definition does not necessarily hint at racism but it points out that it is toward “historically dominant racial groups.” According to the Oxford English dictionary, prejudice is defined as “preconceived opinion [not] based on reason or actual experience.”
So, why do people think it exists? One example would be looking at BET. This channel is Black Entertainment Television. It is often that white people especially, look at this and say “they are being racist towards me,” just because there aren’t as many white people present as there are black. This is where one needs to know the definition of racism before using it. This goes back to the notion of educating people. If you hear or know people that believe reverse racism is real, do not be silent. Let them know your thoughts and provide them with facts disproving reverse racism.
In the specifics of American history, it is white people who have never experienced being enslaved, colonized, or segregated. Though it may be easy to forget what you learned in history class, it is important to always remember. We need to know our history in order to never repeat these atrocities. We are taught about Native American history since elementary school. In middle school there is a specific class on the history of Texas. I remember vividly, learning about the injustices that Mexicans faced at the hands of the white men. While white men did face hardships, it wasn’t because of being a white male. History is evidence for showing that white people did not suffer like minorities did.
Another example is #BlackLivesMatter. I am from Dallas and after the shooting during a BLM protest, five police officers were shot and killed. Since then, more people have decided to say “Blue Lives Matter” or “All Lives Matter”. The issue with this is that the “blue” doesn’t represent a race, it represents a uniform. A uniform can be taken off at the end of a work day. BLM emerged as a group protesting the injustices Black Americans face. “All” lives was shouted by white people wanting to oppose BLM. It is true, all lives do matter, but blue and “All” do not face the same oppression. All Lives Matter is another way for people to further their reverse racism agenda.
At the end of the day, to discuss the fallacy of reverse racism is beneficial. Why? Because it causes people to discuss and inform others about it. So, if you hear other people claim reverse racism is real, let them know the facts! Don’t be afraid to speak your mind.
