Health care is just one of the many important, pressing issues to champion in today’s political climate, however it is one of the most important to get involved with. Why should this trump (pardon the cheesy, but necessary pun) other causes? Well, because there is not one single person on this planet who is unaffected by health care.
People always say the only thing certain in life is death but those people forget about getting sick. Whether it’s as little as a cold, or something as serious as cancer, everyone is guaranteed to fall sick in their lifetime. So, health truly is the one great equalizer on this planet. Without advancements in healthcare ... we have no future. Right now with the possibility of ‘Trumpcare’ looming, it seems as though we risk going backwards and we simply cannot afford that.
I am seventeen years old and currently living on borrowed time. When I became ill, I quickly realized that if I wanted to be heard, I would have to raise hell. If no one was coming to save me, I would have to save myself, and so I have. Health policy advocacy has allowed me to fight for my future and so many others’ as well. My journey has been filled with ups and downs. A major down was when I ended up in the Emergency Room with a Transient Ischemic Attack (TIA), or mini stroke, the night before the Common App came out (if that is not a sign, I do not know what is). While my story may seem unique, it really isn’t. 1 in 10 people have a rare disease like me, which makes you think - if rare diseases are so common, how common are common diseases?
