What exactly is going on?Over the past few years the situation in Syria has heightened into a series of mass destruction. To say you can be racist towards white people is to be false. What you can be is: discriminatory. Racism is something that is institutionalized but can still simply happen to an individual. Racism is a structure. You can see the racism that affects people of color in America daily. The way neighborhoods are set up, the prison system, discrimination when applying for a job, and police brutality. But those two things are very different. According to Dictionary.com reverse racism is an “intolerance or prejudice directed at members of historically dominant racial groups.” The definition does not necessarily hint at racism but it points out that it is toward “historically dominant racial groups.” According to the Oxford English dictionary, prejudice is defined as “preconceived opinion [not] based on reason or actual experience.”
A Liberal in a Red StateIn this red state of Texas, it is not unusual for the word “liberal” to attract some form of antipathy. Naturally this only contributes to my usage as it rolls off my tongue with ease time and time again in conversation. Its definition (free from prejudice or bigotry; tolerant) is comforting in the face of opposition and the experience that comes with its connotations is entirely unique. I am consoled by the beauty in this and the fact that the modern political experience lends itself to inclusivity. “...One of the characteristics of modernity,” writes Susan Sontag in Regarding the Pain of Others, “is that people like to feel they can anticipate their own experience.” Although we may anticipate, we cannot expect. I never expected this cataclysm and I never expected the journey that would come with it.
Health care is just one of the many important, pressing issues to champion in today’s political climate, however it is one of the most important to get involved with. Why should this trump (pardon the cheesy, but necessary pun) other causes? Well, because there is not one single person on this planet who is unaffected by health care.
FIND OUR GIRLSThese Girls Are Not Just a NumberHundreds of lives are impacted every day by the ongoing abductions targeting Black and Latina girls, yet people continue to stay silent. Many people aren’t even aware of the situation, as the media isn’t covering it. The Washington D.C. police have stated that since the beginning of 2017, there have been 501 teenagers reported missing, but only a small number of these cases have actually ended up in the press. Despite what people say, this is not normal. No matter how big the number gets, these numbers will always represent people who have actually been taken from their families, their friends, their lives.
"Transgender students across the globe are not looking for a compromise, they are looking to use their right as a human to use whatever bathroom they feel most comfortable in." Happy International Women's Day to all of our sisters out there, no matter your race, religion, sexual orientation, etc. I am so thankful to be able to have so many inspiring young girls on our team, so I reached out to some of our contributors to see which women inspire them!
